Give shelter, care, and love

Mercy Home

Mercy Home, Gwalior is a residential facility for over 45 special children and young individuals who are speech- and hearing-impaired, and mentally challenged. It was established to serve as a safe haven, but today, it is in a state of neglect and disrepair. Basic necessities like clean drinking water, proper clothing, and a hygienic environment are lacking. Rusty bulbs, fans, and coolers make the space nearly unlivable. The recreation room exists in name only, and the stench and unsanitary conditions make daily life extremely difficult. There is an urgent need for intervention and support to restore dignity and care to the residents of Mercy Home.

Condition of Mercy Home: A pitiable state

Mercy Home, Gwalior is meant to be a sanctuary for special children and young individuals who are speech- and hearing-impaired and mentally challenged. But when our team visited, we were shocked and deeply disturbed by the condition of the facility. More than 45 individuals live here, yet they lack basic necessities—no proper clothing, no access to clean drinking water, and no dignified living environment. The bulbs, fans, and coolers are rusted and broken. The so-called recreation room has no means of recreation. In the unbearable heat, there isn’t even drinking water available—let alone anything cool. Some residents, unaware of the difference between safe and unsafe, have reportedly eaten dead rats out of hunger. The walls of the facility are filthy and crumbling. There is a large gate outside, but inside, it’s a hellish sight. There is no electricity, no functioning fans, and no cooling system. The stench is overwhelming, making it difficult to stand there even for two minutes. There is no sanitation—waste and excreta are left unattended. There has been no medical or health department intervention. We also saw that residents were not even given clothes that fit them—a thin boy wearing an oversized jacket, or an adult in clothing meant for a child. This is a crisis of humanity. When we spoke to the person in charge, they acknowledged the lack of resources. We suggested at the very least, installing four functioning light bulbs to bring some light into the darkness. Mercy Home urgently needs repair, resources, and compassion—so that those who live here can be treated with the dignity and care every human being deserves.

A man is seen guiding another individual, both of whom are dressed in worn-out and ill-fitting clothes—one wearing loose garments, the other in torn and undersized attire. They are walking barefoot, reflecting a stark lack of hygiene and care. In the background, the building walls are dilapidated, with peeling paint and disorderly hanging electrical wires. This scene vividly illustrates the dire living conditions at Mercy Home, where basic necessities such as proper clothing, cleanliness, and a safe environment are gravely lacking.

The building walls and the large blue gate appear old and damaged, with peeling paint and visible rust. The walls are marked with dirt and cracks, clearly reflecting the neglect and deterioration of the facility. A man, possibly engaged in repair work, is seen standing on a ladder, attempting to paint or fix the wall. He is working at a height in an unsafe manner, highlighting the lack of proper safety measures. The surrounding area is equally disorganized—some plants are withered, and trash is scattered across the ground, emphasizing the urgent need for maintenance and care.

This image captures a corner of Mercy Home, where the lack of cleanliness and basic resources is clearly visible. A water dispenser is mounted on the wall, but it appears old and rusted, raising concerns about the availability of clean drinking water. In front of it, two blue drums are placed—one of which is filled with water—but dirty clothes are scattered nearby, indicating poor hygiene conditions. The ground is wet, and a water pipe lies carelessly, adding to the sense of neglect. This scene reflects the urgent need for intervention to ensure a healthy and dignified life for the special children and youth residing here.

The condition of the building is dilapidated—the paint on the walls is peeling, and cracks are clearly visible. The blue gate is old and rusted, reflecting the neglect and abandonment of the place. Two individuals are standing near the gate—one knocking on the wall, the other banging loudly on the gate, seemingly trying to gain entry. The surrounding area is dirty and disorganized, with scattered dirt and litter. This scene starkly highlights the deplorable state of Mercy Home, where the lack of basic maintenance and care is painfully evident.

SWEET HOME

Mercy Home: Change begins with compassion

When we saw the reality of Mercy Home with our own eyes, it wasn’t just a sight—it was a challenge to our humanity. The condition of the place, the neglect, and the helpless state of the specially-abled residents shook us to our core. But we were not there to just feel sad and walk away—we made a firm decision right then: "No more." This place would no longer remain a ruin, but would become a symbol of compassion, service, and change. We took immediate action. First, we organized a deep cleaning of the rooms filled with dirt and foul odor. Then we restored the electricity supply, installed new bulbs, and repaired fans and coolers to make them functional again. In the unbearable heat, these measures brought a sigh of relief. Top priority was also given to the most basic necessity—clean drinking water—which was arranged without delay. But we didn’t stop at just providing facilities. We ensured that each resident received proper clothing, tailored to their individual needs—

  • 2 Full Pajamas

  • 2 half shorts

  • 2 half shirts

  • 1 full shirt

  • 1 bag

It wasn’t just clothing—it was a symbol of dignity. We made sure that no individual ever felt neglected or inferior again.

Our mission is clear: to transform Mercy Home into a place where every resident doesn’t just have a roof over their head, but a life filled with dignity, safety, and self-respect. A place that is no longer a reflection of despair, but a temple of compassion. A place where the recreation room no longer echoes silence, but resounds with laughter and music; where the walls don’t tell stories of sorrow, but of hope and resilience.

We believe that true service lies where the need is greatest. Just like plants need care to grow, human lives also flourish with attention, kindness, and love. This initiative at Mercy Home is a step in our organization’s ongoing journey of humanitarian service—and this journey will not stop here.
